Distracted Driving Partly Blamed for the Increase in Car Accident Related Deaths

In 2016 alone, it was estimated by the National Safety Council that approximately 40,000 people were killed in car accidents across the country. According to the Insurance Journal, this represents an increase of six percent in fatalities over the past year and indicates the highest death toll since 2007. These numbers were further supported by information from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, which reported an increase of eight percent.

The fact is, since 2007, the total number of car accident related deaths has dropped significantly. It wasn’t until 2014 that the rate of deaths started to increase. However, since 2014 the number of traffic deaths has increased by 16%.

What’s to Blame for the Increase?

According to experts, there are some non-problematic factors that have contributed to this increase, including a healthy economy and reasonable gas prices. However, even with these factors accounted for, the increase in total miles traveled, year-over-year, was only three percent. This indicates there were other factors in play, as well.

The habits of drivers play a large role in the increased number of traffic related deaths. There are many motorists who even admitted to engaging in dangerous behavior while driving to researchers. Some of the results of the studies were quite shocking:

  • 25% of drivers stated they knew they were speeding on residential streets
  • 16% of drivers admitted to not wearing a safety belt
  • 43% of drivers who engaged in drunk driving had reported to being involved in at least a single accident
  • 10% admitted that they had driven drunk
  • 47% of motorists stated they felt comfortable while driving and talking or texting on their phone

How to Reduce this Increase in Car Accident Related Deaths

The researchers who initially conducted the study made a few suggestions that they believe would help to reduce the total number of car accident related deaths. This includes implementing a complete ban on cell phone use while a person is driving. This includes a ban on hands-free devices and requiring anyone caught drinking and driving (including first-time offenders) to have to install an ignition interlock system. This would reduce any future instances of drunk driving. They also suggested implementing a three-tier program for inexperienced and new drivers.
